Speckled Pigeon and MIG-17 fighter jet

A Speckled Pigeon seeks shade on the tail section of a MIG-17 fighter in the mid-summer heat in Hargeisa. The MIG belonged to the Somali Air Force, which bombarded the town, reducing 80% of its buildings to rubble during the civil war in the late 1980s. The MIG was downed and is now seen as a symbol of the power of Somaliland’s resistance to the dictator Siad Barre. It is at the centre of the war memorial in downtown Hargeisa and will shortly be placed on a new, much larger structure to commemorate the war and indepdendence from Somalia.
